The SDRT Isobel Kelley Fund; A Brief History

On 27^th July 2003 our apparently fit and healthy two year old daughter, Isobel, got out of bed in the morning and couldn’t stand up. On 29^th July she was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Three weeks later she died.

During Isobel’s tragic illness we were amazed to find in this country how little funding there was for research into brain tumours. In her memory we have established the SDRT Isobel Kelley Fund to raise much needed funds for research into the causes, treatment and diagnosis of brain tumours.

‘SDRT’ is the Samantha Dickson Research Trust and all money we raise is paid directly to this registered charity (no.1060627) which is the largest single organization funding laboratory based brain tumour research in the UK.

 In March 2004 The SDRT Isobel Kelley Fund was chosen as Surrey Police Chief Constable’s Charity for 2004/2005. Following unprecedented support, Isobel’s Fund will continue to be the Chief Constable’s chosen charity for 2005/2006.

Through the support of colleagues, friends and strangers, the Fund has raised over £33,000 towards brain tumour research. The following statistics drive us to continue with our fund-raising efforts:

 ·        Brain tumours account for 25% of all cancers in children and are likely to supersede leukaemia as the number one cause of death in children.

 ·        It is a very depressing statistic that a child diagnosed with an inoperable malignant brain tumour has only a 25% chance of surviving five years.

 ·        Brain cancer has also increased in adults.
